Monday 3rd April
New day, still no reception. Also means my photos aren’t getting backed up, which makes my phone more and more precious by the moment. Rory still feeling sick this morning, Lizl sat with her in her bed before I got up and she fell asleep again. Poor thing didn’t even want to go in the pool with everyone, says her tummy is sore too. Hope it’s just dehydration and not something else. I have a sore on my shin that’s getting bigger too, it doesn’t hurt (unless you touch it) or even itch, but looks worrying. I put some antiseptic ointment on, hopefully that’s all that’s required. Sunburn maybe 20% better – still annoying but not hurting constantly anymore at least, except on my lips. Rash on my shin seems less itchy, but other spots have popped up. Maybe it’s sea lice? Struggling a bit.
By mid-morning the internet had come back, it was easy to tell because everyone’s phone started beeping madly. After Rory woke up from her nap she said she felt much better (20 on a scale of 1-10) which was heartening. She jumped in the pool with Elle just before 11am, we gave them a 30 minute curfew as it was heating up quickly. For lunch we went down to the ocean hut for sashimi, prawn sliders, and beef rolls. It was all good. Rory was slowing down at this point, and only had one sandwich and some apple for lunch. Soon after she was feeling poorly again, and ended up falling asleep on the couch. I’m less confident it’s dehydration anymore as we’re forcing lots of water into her, and she’s going to the toilet pretty regularly.
Rob had gone out just after lunch on the kayak to do some fishing. He hooked a giant trevally which pulled him into a wave and capsized the kayak, rolling him onto coral with the kayak contents spewing everywhere. He was lucky and didn’t get hurt on the coral, and the fishing line snapped before the fish could run away with the rod, but it sounded intense. He managed to recover all the gear fortunately.
The plan for the afternoon was for Lizl and Lisa to stand-up paddle board over to a nearby beach (all the ocean front on “our” property is rocks and coral), Rob would kayak, and the girls, Finn, and me would get a lift from Bill (Phoenix had just gone down for his arvo nap, so one of the nannies would keep an eye on him). However, with Rory feeling sick, Rob would go in the car and I stayed with her. As soon as everyone left she fell asleep where she lay on the couch. Lizl was the first back, and on arrival Rory woke up but was still feeling a 1-2 out of 10. We took her temperature and it was 38°C, which is right on the upper limit of a fever, and higher than we’ve seen her ever. She seemed to perk up a bit, but didn’t have any dinner and asked to go to bed soon after. I hope things get better tomorrow.
Dinner was two types of fish presented three ways – one that Rob had just caught (he managed to catch a bluefin trevally despite the capsize) as sashimi and cooked, and the tuna we caught the other day also cooked.
Things of note:
- The beach sounded good – and most importantly was not a long car ride. Might try again tomorrow
- I offered to drive the car so Bill wouldn’t have to hang around with us, but apparently the owners of the beach only let their own children go there once a year (according to Romina), and the only way we could possibly be there was if Bill chaperoned. I wonder what Bill would have said if I asked him the same question before Romina got to him.
- The girls made some cakes in the kitchen today, which we had for dessert (and they had for afternoon tea). No fact of the day today though ☹
- Rory and Elle setup a day spa in a kitchen nook. Elle did anything except facials, and Rory did facials. I got a foot massage from Elle and a facial from Rory. Rory put a wet tea towel over my face and Elle wiped down my feet and squeezed them a bit. I got kicked out as soon as someone else arrived "you're done" - new customers are more important than existing ones apparently. Joke's on the new customer though - the girls probably re-used my wet towels on them.
Let the water boarding begin!
